Fishing on the Isle of Skye
Why have a guide?
My main role as a professional fishing guide is to ensure you have a great fly fishing experience. Having me as your guide (known as a Ghillie in Scotland), will provide you with expert level knowedgde of the local waters and most importantly, show you how to fish them for the best chance of success. It will also take away the hassle of organising permits and I can provide rods for those of you who are travelling light.

Salmon Fishing
The famous river Snizort is the main Salmon and Sea Trout river on the Isle of Skye, and I work as the Ghillie on the river for the Skeabost House Hotel.
The Snizort is a typical highland spate river and is completely dependant on significant rainfall to create fishing conditions.
Timing is essential and you need a good spate to present the opportunity to catch Salmon & Sea Trout as they migrate from the sea, up to the spawning grounds in the hills.
The Salmon and Sea Trout season begins on the 11th of February and finishes on the 15th of October. The fishing doesn't really start until July and only when subject to the appropriate river height and conditions (prime months are September & October).
Trout Fishing
The premier trout fishing on Skye is on the Storr Lochs. They offer the chance to catch wild Brown Trout and hard fighting Rainbow Trout from the bank or by boat in fantastic surroundings.
Fishing Loch Leathan can be quite a surreal experience with the Old Man of Storr in the background.
There is a good May fly hatch and it lasts through until around late June. This can really bring the Trout into an aggressive feeding mode and make the sport fantastic at times.
For the more adventurous angler, there are many hill Lochs that offer the quintesential fishing for wild highland Brown Trout, again in fantastic surroundings.
The Brown Trout season begins on the 15th of March and ends on the 30th of September. The fishing season is extended for Rainbow Trout until the 30th of November on Loch Leathan only.
Sea Fishing
The Isle of Skye has miles of coast line which has some of the best sea fishing marks in the UK.

Pollack and Mackerel are a great species to fish for and are abundant during certain times of the year. The tackle used and set up is simple, easy for beginners to get to grips with relatively quickly.
It's also a good alternative if conditions for fishing are unsuitable elsewhere.

Sea fishing has no closed season, though the weather conditions will play a part for safety reasons.
